GPA is known as the Grade Point Average which is done to summarize the performance of a student after a semester examination.

In Ghana, GPA is usually on a scale of 1.0 to 4.0, and it is calculated on a semesterly basis. Just as lecturers give grades to evaluate a student’s performance in a course, GPA is used to evaluate a student’s success in the entire degree programme.

The grading system puts students into different class categories: first class, second class (lower class and upper-class division), third class, and pass.

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): This is the sum of the grade points divided by all the credit hours from level 100 to level 400.

HOW TO CALCULATE  GRADE POINT AVERAGE  (G.P.A )

1. Multiply the point value of the letter grade by the number of credit hours. The result is the quality points earned.

2. Total the credit hours for the term.

3. Total the quality points for the term.

4. Divide the total quality poirnts by the total credit hours.

5. The result is the G.P.A. for the term.

Again one has to know the range of scores and their apportioned credit and marks before he or she begins the calculations.

Example

1. Multiple the Grade Point by the Credit Hours to Crosscheck.

2. Taking EBS 101 Elementary Algebra, for example, the Grade is B+ which is equivalent to 3.5.

3. Let’s multiply the 3.5 by the credit hour of course that’s 3 = 10.5

4. Do the same for the courses taken throughout the semester accordingly.

5. From the picture above GP = 74.5
Total Credit Hours = 23

6. We then divide the total Grade Point by the total credit hours to get your Grade Point Average.

74.5 ÷ 23 = 3.2391

In all GPA is calculated in the form of Total Grade Point  ÷ Total Credit Hour
