UTAG STRIKE: UCC likely to shutdown over 21- day rule of non-academic activity
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is likely to shutdown this week due to the industrial action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
Lecturers in public universities in the country have been on strike since January 10, this year has entered into its fifth week over what they described as worsening Conditions of Service.
Shutting down the school will be in accordance with the Acts and Statutes governing the University, which states that the governing council shall close down the University after 21 days of non-academic activity.
“The University might shutdown over non academic activities if the situation is not addressed”, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor, UCC made this declaration last week.
UTAG members on all public university campuses are on strike to force the Government to restore the conditions of service agreed upon in 2012.
The National Labour Commission was in court seeking enforcement to force public universities teachers back to their classrooms after failing to adhere to their earlier directives to call off their strike which is in it forth week.
However the Labour Court 1 Division of the High Court on 3rd February, 2022 urged the National Labour Commission to settle its dispute with the University Teachers Association (UTAG) out of court.
There is public outcry that the strike, which is in its fifth week, could lead to the shutdown of all public universities.
