Following the press release from the teacher unions in Ghana, insisting that the GES withdrawn the semester system policy in the pre-tertiary public schools, the Deputy Director General for Quality and Access of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Kwabena Tandoh has responded that the newly Introduced Semester based academic calendar has come to stay.
Speaking on citi News Breakfast show monitored by Honestynewsgh, the Deputy Director indicated that the system will help to ease pressure on teachers and also help to align the academic calendar to that of the tertiary public schools.
According to the Director, research has shown that classroom absenteeism among teachers in the various schools was because some teachers sought to upgrade themselves. “This is due to the fact that the three-term system in the basic schools overlaps with the university system”, he explained.
“We have to align, hence we are giving teachers the time to upgrade, by aligning their system to the university systems”, he added.
Parents could not align to the trimester calendar since the KG and the Primary had different timetable from the JHS. Hence this new semester system will go a long way to relieve busy parents or guardians of the pressure of combining both work and parenting, noted.
Going further, he revealed that with the new arrangements, pupils will spend 40 out of the 52 weeks in a classroom for the whole year unlike the termly system where pupils spend between 13 and 15 weeks per term and 42- 45 weeks in a year.
